BioWare Was Working On a Mass Effect First-Person Shooter

THE BUZZ: According to a new behind-the-scenes look at Mass Effect, what ended up as the multiplayer mode in Mass Effect 3 originally started as a separate FPS based on the Mass Effect universe.

EGM’s TAKE: These details come from The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3, a new iPad app from Geoff Keighley that takes a look at the development of the game.

The original project was titled Mass Effect Team Assault, and was developed in 2010 by BioWare Montreal as a first-person competitive shooter that would “mix the play styles of Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1943,” and which would “likely be released as a downloadable game.”

In March 2010, the project—which had been in development for four months—was presented to the higher-ups in BioWare. While the idea was liked, it wasn’t meant to be—the concept was changed into what we now know as this co-op mode of Mass Effect 3.

This story—and many more—can be found in The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3, which is available from the iTunes Store (at this link) for $2.99.
