Remember that mysterious new IP that BioWare has been teasing for the last couple of weeks? Well it turns out its an online action RPG called Shadow Realms, BioWare Austin general manager Jeff Hickman revealed during EA’s Gamescom press conference.
This new title is an action role-playing game that is influenced by old-school pen-and-paper games. The game features four player-controlled heroes working together to defeat a single player-controlled shadow lord. The villain can place traps, possess monsters, and more.
BioWare also promises that the game will be very story-driven with new cliff-hanger episodes being released regularly to push the story along—which players will be able to experience together.
“This game brings us back to our roots in the realm of classic Pen and Paper RPG, but also delivers something that’s completely new and innovative for our fans,” Hickman said. “Shadow Realms is a new BioWare RPG that has the hallmarks of all BioWare games with a rich story, a unique world setting and deep combat progression, but built as an interactive experience that evolves the genre and broadens the appeal to online gamers all over the world.”
“It is a game that finally fulfills that fantasy of a never-ending RPG where the players meet up regularly to keep their epic adventures going for as long as they want,” added James Ohlen. “All the enemies, traps and challenges are squarely in the hands of another player, who controls them just like a Dungeon Master. The monsters and villains are smart and unpredictable, making every battle a test of strategy and power. Best of all, everyone gets to enjoy a story that plays out like their favorite TV series, but where they decide the fates of its world and characters.”
Shadow Realms is set to launch on PC in late 2015, but players can sign up now for an upcoming closed alpha that is scheduled to begin next month.
