Black Mesa Getting Retail Release on Steam ‘Soon’

Posted on November 20, 2013 AT 01:21pm

Black Mesa, a fan-made recreation of the original Half-Life, is coming to Stream as a full-fledged retail release for a “relatively low price,” project leader Carlos Montero announced.

According to Montero, the decision to sell Black Mesa as retail release is to help the team financially and to gain full access to the Source engine to “make the game even better.”

“We never developed Black Mesa with money in mind,” reads an update. “Our team is made up of average, hardworking people, and no one joined the team to make money. For us, Black Mesa is purely a labor of love. We believe this philosophy has significantly contributed to the overall quality and feel of the game.”

Montero says Black Mesa will arrive on Steam “soon,” though the team is still working on the Xen content, which “is still a ways off.”

Development of Black Mesa in 2004, worked on by 40 volunteers. The first part of the game, “Black Mesa Inbound” through “Lambda Core” chapters, was released one of the first titles greenlit through Valve’s Steam Greenlight initiative in September 2012.
