Black Ops 2 Enjoys a Visual Overhaul

THE BUZZ: Treyarch claims that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has undergone a visual overhaul.

According to Treyarch’s director of online Dan Bunting (via One of Swords), the graphic upgrades are a mix of “tech and technique.” In a tech demo set in an underpopulated level on Socotra Island in Yemen, the team showed HDR lighting, bounce lighting, self-shadowing and reveal mapping.

The team has also added more visually stunning landmarks to maps, allowing players to relay their positions better.

Black Ops 2 will run at 60 Frames per second, and Bunting revealed that the team refuses to sacrifice performance for visual detail. The PC version of the game will take advantage of DirectX 11. Apparently the team even mocapped a horse for use in the game.

EGM’s TAKE: Treyarch needs to up the visual ante with Black Ops 2. Fans are getting restless regarding the lack of a new game engine, so serious upgrades need to be added to the current one in order to keep them happy. DICE has set an incredibly high bar with Battlefield 3, and Call of Duty may never be able to replicate it using current-gen technology. All Treyarch can do is add little bits to its engine in order to increase performance and visual integrity, while trying to stay ahead of Infinity Ward.

How do you feel about another Call of Duty game using the same engine? Let us know in the comments below.
