Blizzard Awarded $7 Million Following World of Warcraft Bot Lawsuit

Posted on October 18, 2013 AT 04:16pm

Blizzard has come out on top following a two-year legal battle with bot creators Ceiling Fan Software, over the use of bots in World of Warcraft.

The developer has been awarded $7 million by a federal court in California. The original suit was filed back in December 2011 by Blizzard against Ceiling Fan Entertainment, creators of Pocket Gnome and Shadow Bot–two bots which automate certain parts of the MMO.

Blizzard claimed that the selling of these bots constituted tortious interference with contractual relations under California law–basically, the company knowingly sold bots which are against the World of Warcraft terms of service–a contract between Blizzard and the game’s players. According to a company co-owner, Ceiling Fan generated around $289,000 from the sale of bot programs by early 2013. Around 1,400 World of Warcraft players have received warnings, suspensions, or bans for using one of the company’s bots.

As well as the $7 million, the developer was also awarded an injunction against Ceiling Fan, which prevents the company from selling, licensing, or operating bots.

“We are very sorry that we can no longer offer our products and we understand that you may be concerned about this result,” the company wrote on its website. ”After more than 2 years of legal battles with Blizzard Entertainment to both pursue our right to operate and our customer’s right to play WoW as they choose, we did not prevail in the suit and have been ordered by the United States District Court in California to cease our operations.”
