Blizzard Considered Free-to-Play for StarCraft 2
Posted on September 24, 2012 AT 06:53am

At the Valencia eSports Congress, StarCraft 2 lead designer Dustin Browder revealed that Blizzard has considered a free-to-play option for the game’s multiplayer component.
He revealed that the team has considered the option, but can’t find a good way to go about it. “We don’t know how we would monetize it,” Browder said. “While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them.”
It’s a difficult game to make free-to-play as the reliance on units is so heavy, if one player has better units than another than it’s obvious who will win, it’s a difficult game to avoid a pay-to-win scenario.
