Blizzard’s had a secret new first-person game in the works for a while now, and a new job listing may have just given us a big clue about what it is.
The new job posting, which asks for a senior/principal game designer, states that the person hired will define the “abilities, powers, and weapons our players will use,” and must have extensive knowledge about “competitive first-person shooter games.” Later requirements add that the new hire should have an “absolute passion for playing and creating PvP game experiences.”
This lines up with what we’ve heard about the project so far. Blizzard first started hiring for the mystery game back in November 2016, when the company was seeking someone to help create “vehicles and build vehicle handling features” in a first-person engine. It sounds like this PvP first-person shooter, unlike Overwatch, will let players control vehicles and use abilities in fights.
There’s still not a lot of information to go off of, but the PvP focus does kill off some fan theories. A PvP game likely won’t be an Overwatch story-focused campaign, for example, or a StarCraft PvE shooter. It also seems far too early for this to be Overwatch 2, since Blizzard is continuing to update and add new heroes to that game and is still getting the competitive Overwatch League off the ground.
Blizzard hasn’t released any official information about this upcoming project, but perhaps we’ll hear more at this year’s E3 in June.
