In a recent statement, Level-5 CEO and president Akihiro Hino officially revealed that his company’s hit series Youkai Watch is being planned for Western release.

While many gamers outside of Japan might not be familiar with the series, Youkai Watch has been a giant hit in its home territory—with the first game selling over 1.2 million copies as of this point, while its recently-released sequel already reaching the 2 million mark. You can think of Youkai Watch as something similar to Pokémon, just with players capturing and battling all kinds of Japanese ghosts and spirits instead of wild creatures.

Talking to Japanese website ZAKZAK, Hino stated that work has started to bring the game to other countries next year, and that Level-5 has already reached an agreement with a Western toy manufacturer to help release some of the goods based on the game. (In Japan, Youkai Watch has been licensed for everything from toys to comics to a television anime to even an upcoming full-length animated film.)
