Borderlands

Even though it wasn’t the best-selling game during September, Borderlands 2 has more than over-performed at retail, moving over 1.4 million copies since launch. And that’s not even counting digital sales.

GamesIndustry received the report from analyst Ben Schachter at Macquarie Capital, citing the game’s mass success:

Schachter’s forecast had been estimating 3 million unit sales worldwide of Borderlands 2 in the September quarter (including PC sales). It would appear that the game is well on its way. The title is also slated to ship in Japan in a couple weeks, so it may receive another slight boost from that release.

What’s most impressive about that number is even though NPD figures tally the entire month, Borderlands 2 was in stories for less than two weeks before the September cutoff.

Moreover, that 1.4 million isn’t factoring in sales acquired via Steam or other digital distributors, which means that the number could’ve easily reached the 2 million range in that time span.

By contrast, the original Borderlands sold about 4.7 million physical copies across Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3. If sales continue to push into the holidays at a steady rate, Borderlands 2 will easily surpass that mark.
