Bravely Default Costumes, Character Info Censored Slightly Western Release

Certain character costumes and biographical information have been slightly altered in the Western version of Bravely Default to scale back sexualization, according to a post on the IGN Boards.

User BangSilverGang posted screenshots (seen below) from the European version of Bravely Default, which released early December, against screenshots from the Japanese version. In the Japanese version, the costumes being compared are more skimpy, more revealing than they appear in the Western release. According to BangSilverGang—and backed by information on the Final Fantasy Wiki—character ages have also been altered so that characters aged 15 are now 18 and characters aged 17 are now 20.

None of these changes, of course, affect the game’s narrative content, and none of this is terribly new when it comes to 3DS. Last year’s Fire Emblem: Awakening received DLC titled “Summer Scramble” that contained the shot of a female character lowering the bottom of her bikini from behind. The Western release added a piece of cloth (a curtain, seemingly) that effectively censored her backside.

Bravely Default arrives in North America February 7 for Nintendo 3DS.
