UPDATE: The Last Guardian Not Cancelled, GameStop Made Error

Posted on December 22, 2011 AT 12:49pm

THE BUZZ: Team Ico’s PS3 debut has long been delayed and has recently suffered the loss of key staff members, but now US retailer GameStop is telling customers the game has been completely cancelled.

Customers who have reserved copies of The Last Guardian have begun receiving an automated call from GameStop today, giving the following message:

This is GameStop calling with important news regarding your reservation. We’ve been notified by the vendor that The Last Guardian has been cancelled. To reserve a different title, or have your reservation monies refunded, please go to your local store. To repeat, we’ve been notified that the vendor has cancelled production of the game The Last Guardian. If you have any questions, please call your local store.

(Thanks to Darren Hupke for posting the audio of the phone call on his Tumblr.)

EGM’s TAKE: Personally, I’m not going to worry about this just yet. Yes, there have been issues with The Last Guardian‘s development—but it would be a huge title for Sony to cancel. As well, being that The Last Guardian is a Sony Japan-developed game, it feels odd to me that we’d be first hearing this news from a North American retailer, and not some other source.

As well, Kotaku has just chimed in with a response from Sony’s senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, who says in response to this announcement of the game’s cancellation from GameStop: “This is not true.”

So, if you’re receiving this phone call, then don’t panic. Yes, there absolutely could be more to the story, and Sony just isn’t ready to say so yet. For now, however, there’s no reason to assume this is anything more than a mistake on GameStop’s part. It’s also possible that this could mean that The Last Guardian will be going PSN-only, at least in the US. If that were the case, then the game would technically be cancelled as far as GameStop is concerned, as no physical version would end up being released for them to sell.

UPDATE: GameStop has now confirmed to IGN that the calls were made in error via the following statement:

“The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers. Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known.”
