Martial arts expert and film star Bruce Lee will appear as a playable character in EA Sports UFC, EA has revealed.
To ask why Lee is in EA Sports UFC “is the most ridiculous question,” according to creative director Brian Hayes. “You have the premier organization in the fastest growing sport in the world, the UFC; and the most iconic martial artist in the history of the world, Bruce Lee – a martial artist renowned for his philosophies that laid the groundwork for modern mixed martial arts,” he explained.
“I can’t conceive of a universe where bringing these two things together doesn’t make sense. I know there are going to be countless fans that feel the exact same way and they will be eager play with such a legend in the UFC Octagon. I am one of them.
Players who complete the game’s career mode on pro difficulty or higher can unlock Bruce Lee as a playable character in the Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight and Lightweight divisions. Alternatively, those who pre-order the game can gain access to him immediately.
EA Sports worked with Bruce Lee Enterprises to bring the star to the game, working with a catalog of digital references spanning Bruce’s acting career and many behind-the-scenes shots. “A real bonus was the life-cast they sent us that gave us a truly definitive three-dimensional reference that would prove to be the next best thing to having Bruce scanned,” added art director Ian Lloyd.
“There are many challenges associated with trying capture the likeness of anyone who has attained an iconic status on a global scale. Just look at any wax museum. Sometimes a figure is easily recognizable while others seem to be so enigmatic and elusive. Bruce Lee is one such enigma.
“Seeing Bruce Lee walkout and enter the Octagon to fight in the UFC for the first time is a surreal and truly sensational experience. It is hard to deny the influence he has had on the development of MMA and ultimately the UFC.”
EA Sports UFC will be available from June 17 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
