We all have the checklist for what a Call of Duty campaign mode should include: explosions, political intrigue, a wicked twist somewhere along the way, and every so often a controversial scene that gets people talking. While we?re not yet sure about the last one, the rest of that list is in full effect with Black Ops III. These soldiers are hardened warriors enhanced for battle with one of the biggest innovations in the game?s history, the Cyber Core.
The Cyber Core is a source of many powers for the four players co-oping their way through the story. We saw at least 16 slots during the brief demo. A single button press brings up the radial menu, but the action does not stop while a player is choosing a power. Attempting to use it, especially in the middle of a big fight, is dangerous since any enemy could easily kill a player who is slow in choosing which one to use.
Our demo revealed four powers to us, and each one has our heads spinning with strategic possibilities. Firefly Swarm, which unleashes a swarm of small drones to incapacitate enemies on the battlefield. If two enemies are bunched together, the swarm will attack both, so this is good for clearing multiple enemies at once. Also good for area control is Immolate, which designates one enemy for instant and spontaneous human combustion with a blast that also takes out nearby enemies. Remote Hijack gives players instant control of an enemy drone or robotic war machine in the field, turning the tables on enemy forces. Finally, Concussive Wave boosts melee attacks with concussive force, turning a simple punch into an instant kill.
The Cyber Core is just one enhancement coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops III?s campaign modes, and we?re excited to see where this new high-impact story will take us. We?ll find out when the game launches Nov. 6 on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
