Remember how angry Mega Man fans got when Capcom ported the classic Super Nintendo adventure Mega Man X to the iPhone, stripping out almost all the nuances and fine detail that made the original game great? Then you’re not going to like this next bit of news we’re about to tell you.

Capcom Japan has announced the next Mega Man title in the franchise—a social RPG exclusive for iOS devices.

It’s called Rockman X (Cross) Over, and as the name implies, the concept is a crossover of several Mega Man X games into a single adventure, trimmed down for iPhones:

It’s a world where all the worlds of Rockman have crossed over. The gulf of space-time has been closed thanks to the efforts of Dr. Wily, Sigma and other villains to Rockman and co.! Dr Light and Dr. Cossack work together in creating a new robot to oppose this crisis. A production model, this robot uses “battle memory” that has been scattered over the world, and possesses infinite potential to transform and increase his power. The player battles evil as this new type robot. Create your own Rockman, and battle with others to protect peace!

Like the Mega Man X re-release for iPhone, Rockman X (Cross) Over is only optimized for iPhones and the iPod Touch devices, so playing on the iPad will result in a pixelated gaming experience. The Mega Man Network confirmed with Capcom USA community manager Brett Elston that the game would be coming to America eventually, although no price or release date was confirmed.

Oh, Mega Man. What’s happened to you? (Sigh.) It looks like the rest of us will have to keep pulling out that Super Nintendo if we want to relive the good ‘ol days.
