Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will emphasize adventuring and exploration much more than its predecessor, producer Dave Cox told The Escapist in a recent interview.

“I think the original had an adventure element, but I think that we didn’t deliver that side of our original intention,” Cox told Escapist. “That’s what we felt as a team. The hack-and-slash side of it was really good, but the exploration and the kind of finding new things—finding new items—that didn’t quite deliver how we wanted it. So we really felt that we needed to improve that and one of the ways that we do that is to give the player more freedom in terms of exploration.”

According to Cox, the first Lords of Shadow was “very much a linear experience.” To combat this, the team at MercurySteam gave greater control over the camera to players in addition to giving them the option to freely navigate Lords of Shadow 2’s world. This incentivizes backtracking and exploration as opposed to being handed new powers and abilities and items piecemeal.

“We’ve learned a lot from our mistakes,” Cox added. “I’m not saying that we haven’t made any mistakes with this one, we’ve tried to evolve and progress as a studio to deliver something new within the Castlevania genre.”

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 launches on PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC February 25, 2014 in North America.
