Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow Developers Want To Do Contra Next

MercurySteam, the developer studio behind the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow titles, are done playing the vampire-hunting game and want to set their sights on another well-known Konami franchise. Depending on the success of Lords of Shadow 2, the team wants to try their hand at revamping the Contra canon.

Konami development lead Dave Cox—who started working with Castlevania since 1997′s ground-breaking Symphony of the Night—talked to VG24/7 about the shift, stating that he wanted to “go out with a bang”, while their games were still hot. Moreover, he doesn’t want to do Castlevania games for the rest of his career:

“We’ll somebody else can do that. I don’t want to be known as Mr Castlevania, and we don’t want the team to be known as the Castlevania team. Working in a creative industry, you’ve got other projects and other ideas you want to work on. And that’s something that we and Mercury Steam want to do. We want to work on other projects. We’ve got other ideas.”

Cox also states that regardless of the success of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate (which doesn’t look that good) and Lords of Shadow 2 (which is hopefully much better), he doesn’t want to bow to the pressure of topping himself with a potential Lords of Shadow 3 project. Instead, he says it’s better to ‘pass the torch’ and move on:

“Like I said, I know there’s going to be pressure on us to do another Castlevania game, but I don’t want to rise to that pressure. I want to do something else. I love Contra. I’d love to do Contra. At Mercury Steam we’ve got an original idea that I think is really awesome. We’d love to bring that idea to market and I’m hoping that the success of Lords of Shadow 2 will allow us to do that.”

Starting fresh with the Contra series seems like an odd choice, especially since that series hasn’t had nearly as many installments as Castlevania. That’s most likely due to the string of middling, not-so-great console titles in the post-SNES era, although the franchise has had a small resurgence through the Wii’s Contra: Rebirth and Contra 4 on the Nintendo DS.
