Pokémon: Detective Pikachu isn’t the only Pokémon movie on the horizon. There’s another new movie in the works, and it’s a complete CG recreation of the original Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back. Now, thanks to a Japanese trailer, we’ve gotten our first glimpse of what the remade Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will look like, and it’s definitely… different.

Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back was originally released in 1998, and it had the same art style as the animated show at the time. This new movie follows the same story: the discovery of Mew and Mewtwo, and Mewtwo’s revenge as he escapes from a laboratory and attempts to create a new world for Pokémon. While the story’s the same, though, the art style is completely different, and even a bit off-putting.
While the Pokémon look decent enough—we’re used to seeing them in 3D in the recent games, after all—the designs of the human characters take a bit of getting used to. Maybe it’s just the dramatic lighting in that scene, but they human characters don’t translate quite as well to the new art style. Of course, this might just be a case of needing more familiarity with the new art, since we’ve had two decades of seeing Ash, Misty, Brock, and Nurse Joy in 2D and only a few seconds of seeing them in this trailer.
Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is set to release on July 12th.
