Chair Entertainment’s Donald Mustard says tablets will soon rival consoles

Posted on November 4, 2011 AT 01:50pm

THE BUZZ: While the passing of Apple’s Steve Jobs leaves many wondering about the future of iPad gaming, Chair Entertainment’s Donald Mustard isn’t one to shy away from tablet’s gaming potential to push the envelope.

In a recent interview with EGMi: The Digital Magazine, Mustard says that the every-changing world of tablet development is just getting started:

“The leaps in technology between these devices is significant, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down.” Muses Mustard. “If you just look at an iPad to an iPad 2 or an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4S, then we’re talking about [a lot of progress in] a very short number of years.”

More than this, Mustard sees the gap between portable devices and modern consoles shrinking in a major way, “Things are accelerating quickly—and I’d expect, within the next few years, that the tablets will reach the power of current consoles.”

EGM’S TAKE: While we admire his optimism, we’ve heard this particular line of thought before (Sony’s PSP push, anyone?), so forgive us if we remain a bit skeptical prior to next gen announcements from the likes of Sony and Microsoft.

That said, you have to hand it to Chair, as the Infinity Blade series has gone a long way to show what tablet gaming could bring to the industry if more folks took their progressive approach but we have to admit, we’d still love to see a Bluetooth-enabled controller for the ever-aggressive iPad platform.

For even more thoughts on Infinity Blade II, including the inside scoop on leveraging the full development power of Epic and insights into taking the series to the next level, be sure to check out the latest issue of EGMi: The Digital Magazine today!
