Cheaters, Rejoice: The Game Genie Is Back (For The PS3)

Posted on July 17, 2012 AT 11:49am

Remember when “cheats” in video games were a big deal? Just about every title had hidden codes for infinite lives, unlimited ammo, or boosting your characters to Level 99 at Disc 1 of your RPG games—but with save files and checkpoints taking most of the challenge out of most titles, the only real “cheats” come from exploiting gameplay design flaws and custom hacks.

Hyperkin, the video game accessory company you might know from all the retro gaming gear they sell, is bringing back a simple way to cheat your way through a console game. In fact, they’re even going as far as reviving a well-known name associated with video game cheats—the Game Genie.

From the official press release:

The Game Genie: Save Editor for PS3 comes in a USB drive containing the Game Genie setup program. Users install the program onto their PC (the program permits only two installations in order to prevent piracy) and use the USB drive to transfer save files between the PS3 and the PC. Using an Internet connection, the program links the user to a continually updated database of available games and enhancements. Users can pick enhancements that could potentially unlock maximum ammo, money, as well a variety of other power-ups. Popular games that will have modifications at release are Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham City, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Although it’s intended to eventually release for every console, the new Game Genie (which starts shipping out today) is currently a PS3 exclusive. Well, technically.

You’ll actually need a PC to take advantage of the USB device’s game codes, as the software comes equipped with a “save game editor” that can tweak your stats, money, experience, and so on. However, you can’t use any of that stuff for online gaming on the PlayStation Network, although I’m sure people will find a way.
