The first trailer for Far Cry 3 creative director Patrick Plourde’s JRPG-inspired side project Child of Light shows off the fairy tale–inspired gameplay.
Talking to Polygon, Plourde said that the origins of Child of Light begin with his desire to create a game that he could play with his son. To that end, he designed a playable supporting character—the glowing orb of light following the game’s female protagonist—who can help out in a manner similar to Super Mario Galaxy‘s second player, but more influential than merely collecting coins. Plourde also said that he wanted to minimize the amount of menus to avoid alienating children too young to read well.
“Watching sports with a child, when the team scores a goal then daddy’s happy and the kid is happy, then we’re giving each other high-fives,” Plourde told Polygon. “You should have those moments with games. It’s good to share moments, and it can be with a child or it can be with anybody.”
Child of Light is coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
