The upcoming update to City of Heroes has a very fitting name, as City of Heroes: Freedom will bring at least one major new feature: making the game free.

When the update (and name change) hits later this year, the game will become a free to play MMO, offering players the choice of how they play the game depending on how much they want to spend.

Want to play for free? Go right ahead. If you then want to become a Premium Player, you’ll get a variety of bonuses, such as the ability to join Super Groups, in-game mail, and other bonuses. From there, if you want to upgrade to a VIP Player, you’ll get the full, completely unlocked list of features and in-game functions.

Players who are still subscribers to the current City of Heroes when it goes free to play will receive some as-yet-to-be-named bonuses.

For the full rundown of what each player level will have access to in the game, NCsoft and Paragon Studios have put up a comparison chart, linked to below.
