Sid Meier’s Civilization IV lead designer Soren Johnson has formed independent studio Mohawk Games, a company “dedicated to building core strategy games,” Johnson announced.
“We are living in the age of the independent game studio—never before have our tools been so powerful, the distribution channels so accessible, and open development so valuable,” Johnson wrote in an introduction posted to Mohawk’s official blog. “A robust market exists for original strategy games, my team has the experience to make them, and I am passionate about creating them.”
Mohawk Games is operating courtesy of financial backing from Stardock’s Strategic Investment Fund, the same source that helped launch Oxide Games, another studio formed of former Civilization developers. Their first project, codenamed Mars, is being built using Oxide’s 64-bit Nitrous engine.
