Gears of War

Epic Games is losing design director and Gears of War frontman Cliff Bleszinski, the company announced today in a press release from their website. On the upside, we don’t have to spell his last name for a while.

Citing a need for an extended vacation, various Epic Games executives stressed the contributions that “Cliffy B” has made over the years, crediting him with 20 years of impressive work:

Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO: “In 20 wonderful years with Epic, Cliff Bleszinski has grown into a true design luminary, and his contributions to the ‘Unreal’ and ‘Gears’ series have helped shape the game industry into what it is today.”

Dr. Michael Capps, Epic Games president: “In my 10 years of working with Cliff, his passion for creating video games of the highest quality has been unflinching. We are grateful for all of his hard work, and remain committed to making our fans happy and to always raising the bar in everything we do at Epic.”

Bleszinski has been in the gaming industry since the early 1990’s, making his name with with the Jazz Jackrabbit series before going on to the Unreal franchise, and in recent years, serving as lead game designer on the Gears of War series.

Although he’s exiting the gaming industry, Bleszinski will be leaving behind a fantastic body of work. As he noted in a personal farewell to his co-workers, the foundation has been set for Epic Games’ continued success.

(And GOW will continue, so don’t worry. Right now, the developer is hard at work on Gears of War: Judgement.)

He’ll still be updating his Twitter feed, so at least he’s not going to disappear. Perhaps EGM intern Josh Harmon says it best: “At this rate, Gears of War 4 will star normal-sized people who don’t spend the whole game cursing.”
