Middle-earth

Conan O’Brien is taking another fruitless crack at understanding the world of gaming in his new episode of Clueless Gamer, highlighting the upcoming Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

O’Brien always brings celebrities with him on his voyages into gaming, joined this time by Silicon Valley‘s Kumail Nanjiani. Nanjiani was not an entirely random choice to be O’Brien’s adventuring partner, as the comedic actor did voice-over for The Agonizer, one of the many Orc captains that players can kill or control throughout the game.

In the “Good, Bad, and Ugly” section of EGM’s recent Shadow of War review, we poke fun at Nanjiani’s questionable performance, but the awkwardness of his voice-over was apparently intentional. As we learn from creative director Michael de Plater, who joins in toward the end of the episode, Nanjiani was deliberately asked not to alter his voice when performing the role, resulting in an Orc that seemingly just walked off the set of Silicon Valley. It’s strange, considering Nanjiani has experience with video game voice-acting in series like Mass Effect and Telltale’s The Walking Dead.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is slated to launch October 10th on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Nick didn’t start gaming until mid-2006. Once his parents finally allowed a console into the house, it was all uphill from there. Starting out with a PS2, he grew an affinity for Sony consoles and moved on to the PS3, and now the PS4. He keeps his gaming palette wide, but, gun to his head, he’d have to say shooters are his genre of choice. Find him on Twitter @idole808
