Confusion over Wii U as a Wii Peripheral Contributing to Poor Sales, Iwata Says

Posted on April 25, 2013 AT 11:13am

According to Satoru Iwata, the Wii U’s sales are sufferingly partly due to consumer confusion about the product being a Wii U peripheral.

In a financial results briefing for the fiscal year ended March 2013, Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata attempts to explain some of the reasons behind the Wii U’s lackluster first-year sales.

“Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to Wii,” Iwata said. “We feel deeply responsible for not having tried hard enough to have consumers understand the product.”

Iwata’s solution to this, as outlined in the briefing, is to raise greater awareness of Wii U software. As mentioned earlier today, the company intends to have a smaller presence at E3 that’s less about big press event spectacle and more about getting their software back on gamer’s radars.

“As a decisive factor in buying a console is that you cannot play a much-anticipated title without the hardware, we will do our best to have you feel from this summer to the end of this year that there are plenty of great games for Wii U,” he added.
