Cross-Gen Releases to Last 18 to 24 Months, Says EA Exec

According to Patrick Söderlund, executive vice president of the EA Games label, a total transition from PS3 and Xbox 360 to PS4 and Xbox One is up to gamers, and could take up to two years.

Speaking to CVG, Söderlund touched upon how, ultimately, the length of console generation transitions is determined by numbers—install bases, early adopters, et cetera.

“Ultimately, the volumes of hardware will dictate that,” Söderlund told CVG. “The consumers tell us when we can move on. It’s always this way in the first wave where the majority of sales will still be on the old consoles, that’s just how it is, because there’s not enough installed base on the new machines yet.”

Many of EA’s year-one titles for PS4 and Xbox One, including FIFA and Battlefield 4, even Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall—which EA is publishing—are coming out on their current-gen counterparts.

“Historically the first year out most titles have been cross gen,” Söderlund added. “Then the second year there’s less and less, but in year three you’ll probably see everything apart from maybe one or two games in the industry on [next gen]. So I think it will take about 18 to 24 months to get to full gen 4.”
