The Coalition has revealed that it will be enabling cross-play in Gears of War 4‘s Ranked Play in the next few months.
Following the change, Xbox and PC players will be able to play alongside each other and compete in any Core or Competitive playlist. This change is being made to improve the amount of players in Ranked Play on PC following the implementation of cross-play in social playlists.
“Core and Competitive are key experiences in Gears of War 4 that offer a more skill-based matchmade environment,” the developer explains. “While we know many of our players will enjoy playing against their opponents regardless of platform, we also know many of our players will want to ensure a level playing field – and that means keeping their opponents on the same platform as they are.”
To help ensure a level playing field, the developer will also add a cross-play toggle on Xbox One that will give players the choice to either play with or without Windows 10 players in Ranked. However, Social, Competitive Warm Up, and Special Events will all have cross-play enforced.
A release date for the update has not been set, but it is scheduled to go live “in the months to come.”
