Crytek lead graphics engineer leaves for id Software’s Doom team

Posted on July 21, 2014 AT 12:32pm

Longtime Crytek graphics engineer Tiago Sousa has left that company to take a position on id Software’s Doom team.

Sousa announced the move on his Twitter account on Friday, during a QuakeCon festival that saw the Doom reboot’s first major reveal to attendees.

Moves like this happen all the time, of course, but this one is particularly interesting in light of persistent reports that Crytek is suffering serious financial difficulties that have left the company unable to pay employees and allegedly contributed to at least one high-level departure already. Sousa had been with Crytek’s graphics R&D department—a major part of a company that’s known, above all else, for pushing visual fidelity to new heights—since early 2003. Given the circumstances, it seems likely there was more involved with this jump than just an attractive job offer.

Doom is expected to launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. No release date has been given, but keys for a Beta were handed out with preorder copies of Wolfenstein: The New Order, so it’s likely we’ll be hearing something more concrete in the near future.
