Crytek: PC Version Of Crysis 2 ‘Backfired’, New Update To Make It Up To High-End Players

Posted on June 23, 2011 AT 05:04pm

The original Crysis was a technological marvel when it hit the PC in 2007. For the follow-up game, however, Crytek admits that the console versions kept the PC release from being all it could have been.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said that while Crysis 1 still looks amazing to this day due to all of the pushing it did of PC hardware, that push came at a cost: the game was harder to enjoy for entry-level players.

“So with Crysis 2,” Yerli told Gamasutra, “we took a different direction, and it backfired a little bit.”

Part of that came from a desire for portability. In order to make the game easier to cross-develop on consoles, Crysis 2 stayed with DirectX 9 support, versus supporting DirectX 10.

This update – version 1.9 – will be a free download for Crysis 2 owners starting Monday, June 27th.
