THE BUZZ: Crytek’s Rasmus Hojengaard has been discussing how the team plans to address piracy with Crysis 3.
Crysis 2 managed to pick up the award for most pirated game last year, something which the team isn’t too happy about.
“It’s unfortunate that you don’t win any awards for most downloaded game,” he told PC Gamer. ”But yeah, obviously it’s something we’d like to address. Certainly people apparently really want to play our games, they just don’t wanna buy them. So we’ll do what we can, but whatever that’s gonna be is hard to say yet.”
Yesterday Hojengaard retracted a statement saying that used game blocking on next-gen console would be awesome.
EGM’s TAKE: Piracy is a growing concern for developers, especially on the PC. It has even driven some to stop supporting the PC, due to the amount of money they lose. It’s good that people want to play the games, however if developers get no money for them, then they can’t make sequels or new IPs. It doesn’t matter if a game was downloaded four million times, if a publisher sees that a game only sold 500,000 copies that’s the only number that counts. This can lead to studios being closed and jobs being lost. There are two sides to every story and consumers need a reason to throw down the money for a game, if that can be offered then they are more likely to buy it. It’s a difficult problem, but developers, publishers and consumers need to work together in order to solve it.
