Current Team Ninja Head Would Love To See Dead or Alive vs. Virtua Fighter

THE BUZZ: Capcom may seem like the king of the crossover fighting game, but Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi has an idea of his own.

EGM’s TAKE: So, in a recent conversation with UK gaming outlet Edge, Hayashi had this to say:

“In terms of collaboration titles, there are staff on our team who just love fighting games and if there was any chance to do that we’d actively, possibly do that.

“The first 3D game I played was Virtua Fighter, that’s the IP I respect most. Virtua Fighter was the father of 3D gaming, so it’s very well respected.”

This response was in regards to the idea of doing a collaborative fighting game in connection with Dead or Alive, much like Capcom has done not only in the past, but is set to do again soon with Street Fighter X Tekken.

Would a Dead or Alive vs. Virtua Fighter ever happen? I’d say probably not—but then again, I never thought an actual Capcom vs. SNK would ever happen either.

What’s very interesting about this idea is the origins of the Dead or Alive series. The original DOA ran on Sega’s Model 2 arcade board; this was the very board that powered Virtua Fighter 2, and Dead or Alive was the first time Sega had ever licensed that hardware to a third party company.

I remember seeing Dead or Alive for the first time, and I can still recall the first thought that I had: That it was Virtua Fighter 2 with huge, bouncing breasts. Of course, the series evolved into far more than that over time, but the connection between the two franchise certainly is there.

So, who knows? I’m not holding my breath for any sort of VF vs. DOA project, but far stranger things have happened.
