DC Universe Online Goes Free To Play

THE BUZZ: Sony Online Entertainment has announced that DC Universe Online will be going free to play in October on both PlayStation 3 and PC.
Three versions of the game will be available to players: Free, Premium and Legendary. Free players will have access to DC Universe Online, can create two characters and join a league. Premium access will be granted to anyone who spent more than $5 on the original game, either through subscriptions or in-game items, they will be granted more character and inventory slots along with higher cash limits. Finally Legendary will offer all of the games features for $15 a month and includes all DLC packs, 15 character slots, 80 inventory slots and the ability to form leagues.
“In terms of ‘Is it a result in a drop in subs’ – absolutely not,” Lorin Jameson, SOE Executive Producer, said. “This is the right business model. If I can be honest, the game ended up costing a lot more than we thought it would, and this was our preferred business model from day one.”
EGM’s TAKE: DC Universe Online going free to play on PlayStation 3 will act as the acid test for MMO developers looking to use this strategy on consoles.
