Microsoft has announced that the first free title to be offered free as part of its new Games with Gold promotion is Defense Grid: The Awakening.

Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download the game for free from today until July 15–usually the game would set you back 800 Microsoft Points. Microsoft revealed during its E3 presentation that Gold subscribers would get two free games a month–on the 1st and 16th–as a reward for their loyalty, similar to what Sony offers with PlayStation Plus.

It’s odd that Microsoft would only mention Assassin’s Creed II and Halo 3 as two of the service’s free games when the first one is Defense Grid. This is obviously going to leave some fans feeling a little cheated.
