Trion Worlds is reimagining its sci-fi shooter Defiance for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC under the title Defiance 2050.
“How will this experience be different? We cannot simply enter this new future without rewriting some of the past,” producer Matt Pettit explained. “New graphics and improved stability are made possible by this new generation of hardware, which will allow you to experience Paradise like never before. Nothing will be the same, as we are working to reinvent game changing systems. Take your own power and play how you want, with new levels of customization that will create entirely new ways to play Defiance.”
Defiance 2050 is set twenty years after the Arkfall event left millions of Votans dead and Earth terraformed into a post-apocalyptic landscape. Players will be placed in “a dynamic open world where they can explore and fight in skirmishes and story-driven missions on an epic scale.”
The move to current-generation hardware also means that the team has been able to implement features and upgrades that players of the original game have been asking for.
2050 will be free-to-play from launch with “a variety of optional purchasable cosmetics and items that are not tied to power” available to purchase. However, players will be unable to bring their character and items from Defiance due to the team not wanting to be held back by the original game.
A closed beta will be held soon and interested people can sign up here. Finally, Trion is kicking off the Valor Program in the original Defiance, a system that will reward players for completing Pursuits (achievements) with a new unique currency called Valor Commendations, which can be redeemed in Defiance 2050 to unlock items.
Defiance 2050 is scheduled to launch this summer for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
