With the arrival of Season 2’s first Faction Rally, Destiny 2 players were hoping to get more content, including faction-branded weapons, to hunt for during the event. Sadly, as with many events in the game lately, players began to notice Faction Tokens and the new weapons weren’t dropping often, leading many to believe there was yet another glitch. However, Bungie has come out to say there is no technical issue; it’s just chosen a different route this Rally when it comes to earning all the new gear.

The main issues players noticed were a lack of loot drops from Lost Sectors, which has quickly become the surefire means of farming Faction Tokens, and only two of the five new Faction weapons being available. After angry Guardians took to the Destiny Reddit pages to voice their concerns, Bungie revealed the Faction Token farming trick, which players were using in Lost Sectors to earn up to 500 tokens in one hour, had forced them to throttle the drops from Lost Sectors. After the latest hotfix, players can now only complete and earn gear from Lost Sectors in 10-minute intervals. Otherwise, they’ll receive no loot at all.

While this decision isn’t too surprising, as it was more of an exploit discovered by players that was inevitably going to be fixed, the Faction weapon availability is questionable. Before the Faction Rally was announced, data miners found assets for each of the Faction’s five weapons. However, players have only been able to find up to two so far. Confirming the lack of new weapons was not a bug, Bungie’s dmg04 posted a thread on the game’s forum to reveal the guns will come in waves in Season 2.

According to the post, in the first Faction Rally of the Season, which is currently underway, only a new auto rifle is available as the Winner’s Offering, with no chance of earning it through Faction Engrams. Players won’t see another new Faction weapon until the next Rally of the season, and at that point, the first Rally’s auto rifle will become available in Faction Engrams. This system will continue through the remainder of the season until the final Rally, where all four previous weapons will be found in Engrams, and a final weapon will be the Winner’s Offering.

It’s bizarre to see Bungie make such a drastic change to a system that was actually working for the game previously. Destiny 2 is continuously ridiculed for lacking new content, but Faction Rallies were a repetitive event that always offered at least five new weapons for players to hunt. Now, for the team to pull back and choose to give players the same number of weapons stretched across months of play likely won’t keep fans happy.

One possibility for the choice could be connected to game director Christopher Barrett’s recent comments on Twitter. According to the developer, the team is working on changing the entire weapon system, with a possibility of bringing it back to first game’s format. Also, Strike-specific loot is being added to the game, so maybe the team is trying to pull back on content that typically provides extra gear, like Faction Rally.

Destiny 2 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
