One of the new events arriving in Destiny 2‘s upcoming Warmind expansion, Escalation Protocol, will be available in more than one location, according to Bungie.
In a recent interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Escalation Protocol design lead Ben Wommack revealed the survival mission will be playable in two areas on Mars. Also, it will take at least three Guardians to conquer the new challenge.
According to Wommack, the patrol zone for Mars, known as Hellas Basin, will house two public zones where players can experience the new event. “The two public zones where players encounter Escalation Protocol have functionally identical versions of the event, though the terrain and encounter spaces will, of course, be different,” said Wommack.
As it will be a public event, any player can jump into Escalation Protocol, but Wommack warns that only the most skilled fireteams will be able to take it on. “This time around we expect three to five players at max level to feel required, which gives us more opportunities to award more powerful and varied loot,” he said.
Wommack described the upcoming event as a mashup of previously released Destiny events, including Archon’s Forge, Court of Oryx, Prison of Elders, and the Witch’s Ritual. In particular, the development team strived to create an experience that uses the Court of Oryx’s focus on boss puzzles and Archon’s Forge’s horde encounters. Players will have to defeat seven waves of Hive enemies to reach a final boss that will rotate each week. While the difficulty of the event will not allow for a player to take it on alone, working with others will award them with high-level gear.
Bungie seems to be taking a different path from the first expansion, Curse of Osiris, with Warmind‘s content. While the game’s first DLC featured a unique public event, the entire patrol zone on Mercury was arguably too small for Guardians to explore. With Warmind‘s Mars setting, having two public zones with difficult missions should give players more to enjoy than just the new campaign. Plus, the recent reveal that Exotic Masterworks and unique gear can be found in Escalation Protocol could make the event feel more worthwhile than past public events.
Destiny 2 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
