Destiny Dev Talks Inspirations, Races and Classes

Posted on April 4, 2013 AT 10:14am

Speaking to GameSpot during GDC last week, Bungie design director Joe Staten discussed the inspirations behind Destiny’s design.

“I think typically, for the Halo games, we looked at movies. But really for this game, we looked at serial television; great dramas like Lost of The Wire; Battlestar Galactica,” Staten told GameSpot.

“When you’re building a world and you want to evolve it over time, it really helps to have an understanding of how you build this longer-form narrative,” said Staten. “So for us, that was a really interesting new thing we did. I think we probably spend more time watching television these days than we do movies and that’s definitely influenced the way we think about building our story.”

Staten and art director Chris Barrett also discussed character development in Destiny during GDC, revealing the game’s three playable races—Human, Awoken, and Exo (concept art for each can be seen farther down, along with a video from their GDC panel)—as well as the game’s three character classes: the titan, the hunter, and the warlock (whose names pretty much explain themselves).

Bungie’s Destiny is being developed for Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, and Xbox [Whatever], scheduled for an early 2014 launch.
