Destruction is now a huge part of the Battlefield franchise; however, at one point, the idea of destruction wasn’t a major point of consideration.
Speaking to IGN, DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson was talking about the way Battlefield mixes together combat options that each have a particular strength and weakness, and in talking about this he got onto the subject of environmental destruction.
“When we threw in destruction [for Battlefield: Bad Company], with having more dynamic environments in there, it actually worked out pretty well by itself,” Troedsson stated. “The destruction didn’t really rupture the whole Battlefield system; it actually was just a nice-add on.
“There were some maps that, after a while, if you played very long in the same area, you’d just grind down everything to the bottom. Which made it really hard sometimes for, like, the defenders in a rush map. When we see these things, okay, we have to add some covers that actually are not destructible, like some heavy metal fence or something like that.”
