Deus Ex Filmmakers Making a Cyberpunk Flick First, Game Adaptation Second

In an interview with Crave Online, director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill provided an update about the Deus Ex film adaptation and talked at large about their influences and their approach to the film.

For starters, an update: “Deus Ex is moving like a rocket,” Derrickson told Crave. “We’ve turned in a draft of that that everyone seems excited about, and we’re very excited about that.”

The chief philosophy is we’re not making a videogame movie, we’re making a cyberpunk movie. We’ve taken a look at what’s worked in videogames and what hasn’t, and really what we’ve broken down is what we think the audience really wants,” said Cargill. According to the writer, what works is taking elements from the game and bringing them to life on the big screen, not making a 1:1 adaptation of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Instead of simply rehashing the game’s story in film format, both Derrickson and Cargill want to create a cyberpunk film that captures the essence of Deus Ex—a film that respects the source material, but isn’t necessarily a slave to it.

And what films they’re turning to for inspiration? “We’re looking at movies like District 9 and Looper, and Inception,” Cargill added. “We haven’t tried to build it around Johnny Mnemonic or New Rose Hotel.”

I stand by Johnny Mnemonic. But I admit it ain’t so great. Obviously, as a cyberpunk enthusiast, I’m jazzed about the Human Revolution adaptation and word that it’s a cyberpunk movie first and foremost, videogame movie second.
