Deus Ex Movie a Cyberpunk Film First and Foremost, Reiterates Co-Writer

The live-action Deus Ex film aims to be a cyberpunk flick in the vein of Blade Runner, not a videogame adaptation, co-writer C. Robert Cargill said during San Diego Comic-Con.

“It’s not a video game movie, it’s a cyberpunk movie,” said Cargill. “Eidos Montreal has given us a lot of freedom in terms of story; they want this movie to be Blade Runner. We want this movie to be Blade Runner.”

According to Cargill, he was initially hesitant about the project when first approached to co-write the script with Scott Derrickson (who is also directing the film). What sold Cargill on the ideal, ultimately, was the amount of freedom Eidos afforded him and Derrickson with the story. While based on Human Revolution, it won’t be a one-to-one film translation of the game.

Derrickson and Cargill previously worked together on last year’s supernatural horror flick, Sinister.
