THE BUZZ: That’s right, Deus Ex movie. A behind the scenes video has appeared online titled “Deus Ex Live Action Film,” which shows some footage of fight scenes being choreographed.
EGM’s TAKE: This looks too impressive and expensive to be a fan made film, but then again you can’t rule it out either. The credits towards the end of the video list “Enso Productions” which is a professional action design team, meaning they act out and design fight scenes for films. The Deus Ex universe fits perfectly into a futuristic sci-fi film and it’s surprising that nobody has had a go at this previously, however there has been a buzz in Hollywood circles that directors would love to make a conversation.
The problem with games moving to the big screen is the interactivity issue. Fans become invested in franchises, worlds and characters in video games because they devote a lot of their time to them, allowing them to create connections. However in a 2 hour film these ideas are difficult to convey, especially to a mass media audience who may not have even heard of the franchise. Maybe one day when games garner an even wider appeal the translation of games to film will be as normal as movie game tie-ins.
Could this be a small project by the team or is some bigger corporation footing the bill for a full live action film?
