According to director Tetsuya Nomura, the biggest hurdle faced during the development of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix was completely recreating all the assets after discovering the original game’s were lost forever.

Kingdom Hearts was created a long, long time ago,” Nomura said in a video interview posted to Square Enix’s E3 channel on YouTube. “The original data was missing already. It was lost so we had to research, to dig out the original game and recreate everything for HD. It was not that easy.”

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix brings together the original game and content from Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, and cinematic scenes from 358/2 days.

The original Kingdom Hearts debuted on the PlayStation 2 September 16, 2002.

Nomura also touched upon the dev team’s continued relationship with Disney during the video interview.

“It’s been good,” he said. “We’ve been working together for ten years and still have the same counterpart at Disney. Sometimes we have heated discussions, but it’s been good.”

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix launches on Playstation 3 September 10 in North America, September 13 in Europe.
