Devs discuss making realistic lycans in The Order: 1886 behind-the-scenes video

In a new behind-the-scenes video for The Order: 1886, several team members from Ready at Dawn describe their approach to the game’s lycans and their efforts to keep their design grounded.

“We really tried to capture the right balance of both human, lupine anatomy and that level of imperfection that makes it not feel like this kind of action-y, comic book creature and much more like: this is a creature that could’ve existed that we just haven’t seen yet,” art director Nathan Phail-Liff says in the video.

According to technology director Garrett Foster, one of the main ways the team tried to capture this idea of a believable, intelligent werewolf was to avoid using tricks during the transformation and instead build tech so that the human models could transform into lycans in real-time, finding the 3D topology that would allow for shifting and morphing of bone structures and anatomy.

The Order: 1886 launches exclusively for PlayStation 4 February 20, 2015.
