DICE Awards 2014 sees sweep by The Last of Us, gaming pioneers honored

At last night’s 17th Annual DICE Awards ceremony, Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic epic took home a truckload of trophies. Joel and Ellie, however, were nice enough to share the stage with a few other titles and special guests.

Indeed, both Naughty Dog and Sony Computer Entertainment have to be nothing but smiles today, as The Last of Us walked away with ten wins, including Game of the Year and Adventure Game of the Year.

The Last of Us wasn’t the only game to win honors, however, with other nominees such as Super Mario 3D World, Forza Motorsport 5, and World of Tanks picking up awards of their own. (The full list of winners can be found below.)

As well, during the ceremony the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) took time to honor some pioneers in the world of gaming. First up were Leslie Benzies, Dan Houser, and Sam Houser, as all three were inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame. The Houser brothers, of course, are two of the key founders of Rockstar Games, and Benzies has been the lead developer on the company’s best-known product, Grand Theft Auto.

The AIAS also honored Eugene Jarvis with its special Pioneer Award. Jarvis was highly influential in the early days of gaming as a game creator at Williams Electronics, spearheading projects such as Defender, Robotron: 2084, Smash TV, and Narc.
