When Battlefield 3 shipped, some were upset that the game didn’t feature the official modding tools that Battlefield 2 had offered. This week, DICE talked about the reasons for that.
At GDC Europe, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson said that his team was scared of what could happen if players were given too much access to certain elements. “We’re afraid of all the things that can come with releasing the code,” Troedsson stated.
Modding has been a huge part of the PC gaming community for nearly as long as anybody can remember, but there has now grown a battle between those who still want to keep that modding scene alive, and those who want to do as much as possible to keep online multiplayer fair for all. Troedsson noted these concerns as one reason DICE didn’t feel comfortable supporting mods in Battlefield 3.
Another reason? Since Battlefield 3 isn’t just a PC game, if DICE were to officially support mods, they’d want to do it across all platforms—and that would be far trickier to do on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
“If we do mod support, we want to do it really, really well,” Troedsson explained. “We are not ready to do this yet.”
