Halo

Ready Player One, the movie adaptation that’s riddled with pop culture references, has released another new trailer. And this time around, the Spartans from the Halo series are making an appearance.

An earlier trailer proved that the movie’s scope would expand beyond the ’80s references of the original book, since it included more modern gaming references like Tracer from Overwatch (as well as the more classic Chun-Li and Ryu from the Street Fighter games). The movie centers around a virtual reality game dubbed “Oasis,” so video game references fit right in.

The Spartans appear at around 1:38 in the trailer, when a group of rebels runs across the screen from right to left, with the world of Oasis revealing them to be—in virtual reality—dressed in full Spartan armor.

It’s a bit of an ironic cameo. Director Steven Spielberg has been supposedly developing a Halo TV series for almost five years now, and though various crew members have promised that the project is “still moving forward,” we haven’t seen anything to show for it. Now, instead, Spartans are appearing in an entirely unrelated movie directed by Spielberg.

Ready Player One arrives in theaters on march 30th.

Did you spot the Halo reference in the new Ready Player One trailer?
