Disney Not Joking About Need For Speed Movie, Releases Feb 7, 2014

Disney apparently has no qualms with distributing a movie about hot rods and nubile racer girls, as DreamWorks Studios‘ Need For Speed movie is set to release in a little less than two years. Isn’t the target audience for racing movies covered already?

Deadline Hollywood confirmed that the project is indeed moving forward:

DreamWorks offically acquired feature film rights to the property last month after setting Act Of Valor co-director Scott Waugh to direct. George and John Gatins developed the original story and George is writing the script; John is producing with Mark Sourian. Need For Speed was the first major project expenditure DreamWorks made once the company came out of suspended animation while waiting for Reliance to invest cash in a re-up.

If EA is putting up their video game franchises for film projects, there’s plenty of other solid series that could definitely produce scripts more original than Need For Speed.

Then again, fast cars, buff racers, and faster women are a proven success story for Hollywood, which explains how the Fast and Furious franchise survived Tokyo Drift and a semi-reboot.

Maybe I’m just bitter because I want a Mirror’s Edge film. It could still happen.
