Nintendo Switch

Donkey Kong fans were given an update on the franchise amidst the many announcements made during the latest Nintendo Mini Direct. The formerly Wii U–exclusive platformer Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch on May 4th, with a new playable character and difficulty mode for newbies.

Revealed in a brief trailer, seen below, the Switch port of Tropical Freeze will feature the original game’s challenging but rewarding side-scrolling gameplay. For newcomers that want to experience the game more easily, Funky Kong, now a playable character, will star in the “beginner-friendly” mode.

The cool and calm Funky plays similarly to the rest of the DK crew, but instead of only having one unique ability, he has them all at his disposal. “Funky Kong can double jump, hover, perform infinite rolls, and even perform infinite underwater corkscrews,” stated Nintendo in a release. “Thanks to his sturdy surfboard, even spikes can’t slow him down.”

Fans looking for a more difficult and traditional experience can play as Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Cranky Kong from the original release of Retro Studios’ game, which debuted as a Wii U exclusive in 2014. Also returning will be two-player co-op, but with the portability of the Switch, players can enjoy it on the go with each Joy-Con acting as a controller.

It was also revealed during the Direct that Donkey Kong will be featured in the upcoming DLC for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, so fans of the icon will have plenty to enjoy later this year. If you’re looking for a different experience on the Switch, though, Nintendo also revealed a remastered version of Dark Souls will launch later this year.
