Don’t Starve Together, a free multiplayer expansion for Klei Entertainment’s survival roguelike, is coming to its PC version as soon as late this summer, the developer revealed.
“As we developed Don’t Starve, multiplayer slowly turned into a hot button issue in the community,” staffer JoeW wrote on the company’s official forums. “OK, let’s face it…it was always a hot button issue. A lot of people have voiced their feelings that multiplayer would be perfect in Don’t Starve. However, at the time we didn’t have the resources to make it happen and we weren’t confident that it would actually work both in concept and implementation”
According to Joe, Klei recently expanded their developer roster, and some of their new blood claimed they could get multiplayer working for Don’t Starve, showing as much by creating a proof-of-concept prototype.
This early on, few details are concrete. Don’t Starve Together will feature public and private games, and the team at Klei believe it will have most or all of the main game’s normal features, possibly even new ones. Klei is shooting for a 2-4 player count, leaning more toward four as a minimum. The free multiplayer expansion will debut first on Steam, with other platforms not ruled out but not confirmed, yet, either.
