THE BUZZ: Majesco Entertainment has announced that it will be revitalizing Double Dragon on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network with the new title, Double Dragon: Neon.
Neon isn’t just a “shoddy sequel,” according to Majesco, it’s a “face-melting 80’s tour de force!”
“Double Dragon: Neon is far from a standard retro remake,” said Sean Velasco, Director, WayForward. “It’s WayForward’s love letter to the decade that spawned the franchise – the music, the style, and culture of the 80’s pulse through the nucleus of Double Dragon: Neon. But don’t think this is a simple graphical facelift; with our innovative ‘mix tape’ level up system and power-up high-fives, we pushed it to the limit!”
The game is being developed by Wayforward and is due for release this Summer.
A demo of Double Dragon: Neon will be playable at PAX East this weekend at the Reverb booth.
EGM’s TAKE: The father of the side-scrolling fighting game, the much loved Double Dragon just doesn’t hold up that well. It’s one of those games that was more innovative than awesome (which isn’t to say we didn’t plug many hundreds of quarters into Double Dragon arcade machines back in the day). So the question becomes whether or not its possible to capture the nostagia of the original and turn it into a quality modern game? We certainly hope so, as we really do have a soft spot for Jimmy and Billy Lee, despite the horrible movie version co-starring Alyssa Milano. We’d love to see their most triumphant return.
